Dear readers,

Science Shops are recognized on the European level – although it still surprises how often people say they never heard about this amazing approach before. We now have a newly established national network in Italy. There is a French speaking Science Shop network including French speaking African countries and we see a Spanish speaking network that includes Bolivia. I as well recognize a grown interest on national levels in participation, citizen science, science communication. European project experience can be a good selling point. But it also needs this kind of ‘European backup’ for future national activities.

Facing the fact that Horizon Europe will no longer have a specific funding line for Society-Science-Relations Science Shops thus should seek active participation in calls and consortia – highlighting their role as mediators, their experience with engagement and participation methodologies and their approach of taking up civil society’s needs and concerns into their innovation and research activities. Exploring funding schemes beyond Horizon Europe should get more attention (Erasmus+, InterReg, foundations). There are Science Shops which already have experience in working with these funding schemes.

At the upcoming Living Knowledge conference in June in Groningen, the Netherlands, we will celebrate 20 years of Living Knowledge. Over the years, numerous approaches have been developed to do research with and for communities. They have different names, they have different histories, and follow sometimes slightly different objectives. But they all have in common to co-create and share new knowledge for an inclusive, equitable, healthy and sustainable society.

Therefore, we hope to see you and talk about your Science Shops, research shops, living labs, citizen science, public engagement, participatory action research, investigative journalism, community-based research, community service learning, user driven innovation or however your specific approach is named. LK9 will offer the floor to discuss the future direction and kind of support the LK network can provide to your work, to your Science Shops in the upcoming years.

So join us in Groningen for fruitful discussions and our anniversary party.

The abstracts are currently under review by a carefully selected international team of reviewers. We intend to give feedback on your abstracts in the week of 17th of February. From that day on it will also be possible to register for the conference. More information will follow on our website.

Friday Night Fever
As the conference marks the 20th anniversary of the Living Knowledge Network, we added a social event ("after party") on Friday evening to the programme. Continue chatting to old and new friends and maybe even do a little dancing (without having to get up early for next day's sessions ;-)).

Launch of the TeRRIFICA Crowdmapping tool!

The TeRRIFICA project is glad to announce the launch of the TeRRIFICA Crowdmapping tool. This website is built to collect your experiences and opinions where in your local environment climate change comes alive and is tangible. We invite you to put a mark in this interactive map of your region and ask you to explain why you decided to mark this place.

TeRRIFICA is about listening to all different voices within the territorial ecosystem (not only researchers but also citizens, politicians, industry, teachers…) and co-create competence for this global problem. There are no right or wrong answers and/or opinions. They are your local, personal experiences of climate change.

Science Shop mentoring supported through 3 new Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership projects

Three new community engagement projects have been funded through Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership Higher Education funds, two with lead UK partners (CIRCLET, Queen’s University Belfast and CaST, University of Exeter) and one with a lead Irish partner (UNICORN, University College Cork).  These projects follow in the footsteps of the ENtRANCE project led by Vrije Universiteit Brussel which ends in June 2020. Erasmus + Strategic Partnership funding supports the exchange of good practices amongst partner organisations. Activities funded can include strengthening cooperation and networking between organisations; promoting the development, testing, and implementation of innovative practices and promoting the recognition and validation of knowledge, skills, and competences for example. CIRCLET project

Five universities have recently been awarded €420,000 through the Erasmus + strategic partnership fund to support academic staff to embed community engaged research and learning in their modules over the next three years (2019-2022). The CIRCLET project - Curriculum Innovation through Research with Communities: Learning circles of Educators and Technology – will build on the skills and experiences of the five partners in working with local community organisations via Science Shops
Four partner organisations from the H2020 EnRRICH project (2015-2018) - Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Corvinus University of Budapest (CUB), Technical University of Dublin (TUD) and co-ordinating partner Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) - have been joined by the Open University of Catalonia (UOC) in this project.

Building on the core activity of supporting the redesign of courses, CIRCLET will produce resources for academic staff in the digital era and will offer academics in each institution an opportunity to participate in (trans)national learning circles and in an online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) module.
These resources, once developed and piloted, will be made available to the wider Living Knowledge community with a view to supporting Science Shop practice internationally.

A separate consortium has been awarded €380,000 to advance their knowledge and understanding of what constitutes a successful and sustainable engaged learning programme. Communities and Students Together (CaST), led by the University of Exeter in partnership with Ghent University, University of Magdeburg, University of Parma, University of Malaga, and the University of Turku, will explore existing initiatives and aim to incorporate successful elements in a series of new community-based engaged learning programmes in each partner university.

CaST, which commenced in December 2019, will begin by reviewing engaged learning in the international context and in each partner country, and will seek to understand the practicalities and structure of existing initiatives, and their impact on all stakeholders. Our Case Study Compendium will include an overview of the engaged learning landscape in each partner institution, and will provide an in-depth exploration of one or more case studies of engaged learning from each institution. Each partner will then incorporate lessons from the previous two outputs in the development of an innovative engaged learning programme in each institution which will enable students to work on real world societal challenges.

A final conference anthology and an Engaged Learning Toolkit will be made available to download from the project website at the end of this 32 month project. We anticipate the toolkit will include a short paper seeking to unpick the successful and less successful elements and processes of engaged learning programmes and guidance for university strategy formation around engaged learning.

UNICORN project

University College Cork (UCC) and Cork City Council alongside four other universities with community partners were recently successful in an ERASMUS+ application securing an award of €441,320. The project entitled UNICORN (UNIversity COmmunity leaRNing) will run for 3 years, and its goal is to enhance the Third Mission of civic engagement and social responsibility of the participating universities. The four other HEI partners are Universita di Bologna (UNIBO) coordinators, Universidad Completense de Madrid (UCM), Universitaet Leipzig (UL) and Universiteit Antwerpen (UA).  
The UNICORN project will design and test a new mobility scheme for university students that combines international mobility with a Service-Learning (Community Based Learning) experience in the community. Mobile students often fail to connect to the local context and by participating in a S-L project offered by the hosting university, mobile students will have the opportunity to really dive into the local reality. By adding the mobility component to a community-based learning experience the local projects will be open to international students, and the student team engaged in each UNICORN project will potentially be transnational / intercultural: thus, the impact of the experience on the civic and democratic competences acquired by students will be further enhanced.

The implementation of UNICORN projects requires the collaboration between the universities and community organisations (municipalities, non-profit organisations and NGOs) and will produce the following outputs:
  1. UNICORN Mobility Scheme and Living Catalogue - a brand new set of international S-L projects and the student mobility scheme activated among the partner EU HEIs for the purposes of participating in these UNICORN projects (UCC is leading this output).
  2. Training Resources for academics and community organisations
  3. Mobility Administrative Toolkit
  4. MOOC for students
  5. Recommendations for policy makers: “UNICORN as a key to link Internationalisation and Third
    Mission of HEIs”

The project Engagement 2030 brings together students and local associations to create new forms of development education activities

Engagement 2030 tackles the challenge for established local associations to find juniors to support their work and for university students to find structural support for their own commitment. The project is initiated and coordinated by finep (forum for international development + planning) and assists local sustainability associations and initiatives and students in developing collaboratively innovative forms of engagement activities.

In cooperation with three German universities (Esslingen, Tubingen and Heidelberg), finep realises university seminars that equip the students with knowledge on global learning issues.
As part of these courses, the participants apply their knowledge by developing together with volunteers from local associations inspiring activities. As part of these courses, the participants apply their knowledge by developing together with volunteers from local associations inspiring activities. By now, one team has planned a DIY party to promote sufficiency in everyday life. Another group has implemented workshops for secondary school students, during which campaign material concerning the Sustainable Development Goals was created. A cargo bike will be equipped with the developed material and provide information on schoolyards and local markets.

By the end of 2021 a variety of successful forms of engagement activities that combine students' and associations' needs will be shared with other multipliers by conferences and training manuals.

STARBIOS2: Making bioscience responsible

The STARBIOS2 project has developed a model for how to promote the practice of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in bioscience research institutions. The project partners  have published a guideline and now offer an introductory training on RRI in the biosciences and how to achieve structural change. The model will be presented in two webinar training sessions, with the practical experience of organisations that have implemented RRI action plans in focus.
The STARBIOS2 model is based on an iterative process, where European research organisations have implemented action plans to achieve structural change for five aspects of RRI: ethics, gender, open access, education and public engagement. Read more here. Two webinars will be offered: In the first, the STARBIOS2 project will be presented.. An outline of the model for RRI action developed within the project based on the experiences form STARBIOS2 partners. We also share with you how bioscience research organisations outside Europe are practicing RRI, and how they have used the STARBIOS2 model. Update from the EU Horizon 2020 SciShops project:
The EU Horizon 2020 SciShops project comes to an end on 29 February 2020. Its final event, the SciShops Symposium, was held at the University of Brescia, Italy on 30-31 January. The programme consisted of a range of presentations, discussions, workshops and networking opportunities, as well as an exhibition showcasing SciShops’ 10 new Science Shops and the different ways in which they are engaging with their local communities.

Canadian students win SciShops Pitch Challenge 

Brianna Wilson and Sonia Zawitkowski, psychology students at the University of Guelph in Canada, have been selected winners of the SciShops Pitch Challenge. They won the competition with their engaging and informative video about the community-based research that they undertook to understand how financial abuse as a form of intimate partner violence manifests in the Toronto Area. Participants in the Pitch Challenge, organised by the Horizon 2020 SciShops project, were invited to present the research they are doing together with their local community in a video. The winners were invited to present their community research project and video at the SciShops Symposium in Italy last month.

BLOOM – Strengthening the public awareness of bioeconomy in EU regions

BLOOM’s session at last year’s European Week of Regions and Cities (EWCR) was designed to complement the array of engagement activities that had been set up at their kiosk only 20 meters away from where the session was held.
This is what they have experienced:

The Monday evening opening of BLOOM’s kiosk served as a fitting precursor to the session the next day, as the project partners invited passers-by to come and chat and share ideas and experiences on bioeconomy. Already then, they observed and were impressed by the curiosity that visitors expressed regarding bioeconomy. They soon got a sense of the potential of EWCR 2019 and their session the next day; to connect with the broader public on issues pertaining to the bioeconomy.
The session on the next day followed a similar pattern of participation. A start with a visual presentation of the project, its goals and structure, followed by a more detailed discussion on the engagement activities at the 5 Bloom hubs and how the needs of different kinds of stakeholders are met through the workshops that were facilitated there.   

EWRC 2019 has provided the BLOOM team with the space and audience to test their ideas, take note of stakeholder feedback and consolidate their key messages for a more effective and responsive engagement with the broader public.

There were many wisdoms shared that the BLOOM team is taking to heart, but one that stands out is from a workshop entitled ‘New ways to engage with citizens through permanent and structured consultations’ where it was said: “Listen to concrete experiences of citizens. Be less technical and more bottom up, face to face as well as online. Rely on local and regional partners and give quality time for the dialogue with citizens.”

Putting on exchange of experiences with FIRE!

FIRE! – the ERASMUS+ based “Fertilize Innovation in Responsible Education!” strategic partnership started in December 2019 in Berlin. The consortium consists of Kubus – Science Shop of Technische Universität Berlin, Boutique de Sciences Lille (BdSL) / Lille Universty, France, Sciene Shop of ADAMA MICKIEWICZA University in POZNAN, Poland and Institute for Environmental Solutions (IES) in Cesis / Riga, Latvia.

FIRE! addresses the staff of Science Shops and other intermediaries at the interface between science and society. It aims to trigger a cooperative self-organized teaching and learning process based on own experiences.

Moreover, it deals with innovative science communication and the development of relevant and high-quality skills and competences and strengthening the recruitment and skills of Science Shop staff. Reflecting Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Citizen Science on European level, dialogue between science and society needs efficient tools and formats and professional intermediaries.

FIRE! Also aims to be innovative – it will create new concepts / processes as well as tools / methods and successfully implement them in the practice of the participating partners. The project reflects on the working process of Science Shops practicing dialogue between citizens and scientists. The whole project fosters intended future cooperation and continuing exchange of experiences between Science Shops and the development of social, civic and cultural translation competences. Finally, it aims to contribute to a process of (joined) continuing education for intermediaries on European level.

Together at the university - the celebration of Corvinus Science Shop

Autumn 2019 marked the second completed academic year of Corvinus Science Shop - a great opportunity to organize a meet-up with stakeholders. The 20th November event was a workshop, an award ceremony and a friendly meet-up at the same time to highlight and acknowledge the wealth of achievements that the science shop community accomplished here together.

In the past two years:
  • 76 course projects involved 29 lecturers, 765 students and 40 community partners,
  • while exchanging views on 18 workshops and events, some smaller and bigger ones, including the 8th Living Knowledge Conference,
  • holding 15 conference sessions and presentations,
  • and making 18 media appearances.
While the current reorganisation of Corvinus University of Budapest offers the chance to broaden the scale of Corvinus Science Shop’s activities in the future, the team continues to nurture the existing network of excellent academic and community partners who shared their excitement to keep engaging and learning from each other in the science shop spirit.

The Science Shop received encouraging words through video messages from outstanding members of the international Living Knowledge community, Dr. Henk Mulder and Dr. Emma McKenna (see their videos here and here) as well as from a long time local mentor and community partner, Rita Galambos, who praised the philosophy and the buoyant operation of the organisation.

The event also gave space to the official launch of three Corvinus Science Shop awards: the first Student, Academic and Community Partner Awards were handed out by Dean Zita Zoltay Paprika during the celebration that included some tasty surprises from our local community partners.

The Citizen Science COST Action – a Framework in Science and Technology promoting creativity, scientific literacy, and innovation throughout Europe

Main Aim
The main aim of this Action will be to bundle capacities across Europe to investigate and extend the impact of the scientific, educational, policy, and civic outcomes of citizen science with the stakeholders from all sectors concerned (e.g., policy makers, social innovators, citizens, cultural organizations, researchers, charities and non-governmental organizations), in order to gauge the potential of citizen science as enabler of social innovation and socio-ecological transition.Currently, 36 member countries signed the MoU, and members of 38 countries registered at the webpage and feel part of this Citizen Science Action, contribute to workshops, host young scientists, or develop scientific papers.

What else you need to know?

The Action will explore the potential transformative power of citizen science for smart, inclusive, and sustainable ends, and will provide frameworks for the exploitation of the potential of European citizens for science and innovation. The relevance and timeliness of the Action derive from the recent explosion of activity around citizen science, as ordinary people and researchers begin to understand the power of technological devices which allow them to record the environment around them and share and collectively interpret data and knowledge to advance science and society.Given the transdisciplinarity of citizen science, the Action will benefit from the different contributions and perspectives from a range of disciplines and research cultures. As the latter rarely overlap and engage directly, the Action provides an ideal means for knowledge sharing and focused development on the topic by enabling better integration of separate national activities at a European and international scale.

Launch of the first reports of the TeRRIFICA project! Moving towards innovative climate action through co-creation

TeRRIFICA (Territorial Responsible Research and Innovation Fostering Innovative Climate Action) is a European project aiming at developing innovative climate action through stakeholder engagement and co-creation. With its network partners in six regions of Europe, this H2020 project has just published: 

TeRRIFICA Case Studies Report:
For this “Case Studies Report”, the TeRRIFICA pilot region teams from Belarus, France, Germany, Poland, Serbia and Spain identified case studies of community-academia research partnership from their regions or countries related to climate change adaptation and/or mitigation. This Report includes a summary of these analysed projects that highlights common outstanding elements for the development of future climate actions with community-academia research partnerships. 

TeRRIFICA Report on institutional framework:
The first step for fostering co-creation on climate change is to learn about the local contexts of the six pilot regions of TeRRIFICA. The “Report on institutional framework conditions, relevant local and regional processes, instruments and co-creation factors related to or adaptable for climate action” includes different activities to create a comprehensive overview on the state of the art of climate change adaptation research and innovation strategies and examples and communication strategies and methods at different levels of complexity 

TeRRIFICA Guide on engagement and co-creation:
The TeRRIFICA Guide on engagement and co-creation aims at fostering stakeholders’ engagement and co-creation within the context of climate mitigation & adaptation. This guide provides some (non-)prescriptive ideas, recommendations & methodologies. They are a “starting point” to help stakeholder engagement & co-creation processes within climate change policymaking in the pilot regions. It disseminates “good practices”, i.e. some methodologies and experimentations that may be transferable to other regions in Europe

Launch and presentation of the 7th Higher Education in the World Report "Humanities and Higher Education: Synergies between Science, Technology and Humanities"

Societies are witnessing profound changes with clear implications for the future; these environmental, scientific, technological, cultural and social transformations are presenting transcendental challenges in terms of thinking and rethinking the meaning and value of human experience, and even of what it means to be human. These challenges can only be tackled through a holistic approach involving the humanities, science and technology. Together, they must necessarily play their part as both drivers and critics within the framework of these transformations.
With contributions from 130 experts from around the world, the 7th Higher Education in the World Report Humanities and Higher Education: Synergies between Science, Technology and Humanities (HEIW7) aims to provide the academic community, policymakers and decision-makers within higher education and wider society with a diagnosis and analysis of the current state of affairs, and offer proposals that can broaden our horizons towards a much needed integrated approach to knowledge.
The HEIW7 was presented on December 10th 2019 in Barcelona in an open event at CaixaForum Barcelona and analyses the role of humanities in higher education and their interrelations with science and technology. It is structured around 24 key questions and it includes contributions from 130 international authors.

Ensuring durability of community-university engagement in a challenging context: Empirical evidence on Science Shops

Universities’ community engagement is confronted with growing pressure from increased competition and marketisation of knowledge, along with widespread adoption of New Public Management measures. This context is notably challenging for forms of engagement that are based on such principles and practices as cooperation, knowledge democracy and public value. Within this framework, this article identifies competencies and strategies that may ensure durability of community-university partnerships.

The article of Andrea Vargiu and Mariantonietta Cocco  of Università di Sassari presents the results of two different, yet coherently connected, research endeavours on Science Shops in Europe. Science Shops are a unique way to organise relationships between science and society mainly by responding to research questions arising from citizens and/or Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), usually by means of a participatory methodology and active involvement of students.

Financial Abuse as a form of Intimate Partner Violence

WomanACT conducted research into women's experiences of financial abuse in the Toronto area.

Hidden in the Everyday draws on qualitative data gathered through surveys and focus groups with service providers and in-depth interviews with survivors. This report examines the experiences and impacts of financial abuse as well as the challenges in confronting it and the opportunities to prevent and address it.

The research was funded by the City of Toronto and conducted with the support of the University of Guelph.

Manifesto: Evidence-based Science Communication

Evidence-based Science Communication can empower research and innovation systems to address global challenges and put public interests at the heart of how knowledge is produced, shared, and applied. For science communication to play this mediating role effectively, the authors propose a more integrated and “evidence-based” approach. This commentary identifies key issues facing the science communication field. It suggests a series of prescriptions, inspired by the impact of “evidence-based medicine” over the past decades. In practice, evidence-based science communication should combine professional expertise and skills with the best available evidence from systematic research. Steps required to achieve this outcome include more quality assurance in science communication research, significant changes in teaching and training, and improved interfaces between science communication research and practice.

Launch of the GUNi publication “Implementing the SDGs at Higher Education Institutions: Challenges and Responses”

"Implementing the 2030 Agenda at Higher Education Institutions: Challenges and Responses" is the second publication of the GUNi Group of Experts on SDGs and Higher Education devoted to SDGs. It focuses on the obstacles that HEIs encounter when implementing the SDGs and offers some clues as to what some higher education institutions do to overcome them. It includes regional and institutional approaches to sustainable development and offers a picture of how some higher education institutions can, and do, embed sustainable development in their core missions. Through this project, GUNi hopes to reinforce the role of HEIs, partnerships, knowledge and research in the achievement of the goals and a better future for all.

The GUNi Group of Experts on SDGs and Higher Education:
On response to the 2030 Agenda, GUNi established a strategic line around sustainable development. One of its main initiatives is the Group of Experts on SDGs and Higher Education, whose members are representatives of some of the most relevant networks and organisations of higher education and sustainable development. The Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft (LBG) Open Innovation in Science Center in Vienna, Austria invited a multi-stakeholder group consisting of researchers from multiple disciplines, citizen scientists, youth and patient advocates to co-create a guide on ‘How to’ meaningfully involve patients and the public in research.

Implementing climate change action: A toolkit for Caribbean civil society organisations, 2017

This toolkit is an output of the "Climate ACTT: Action by Civil Society in Trinidad and Tobago to build resilience to climate change" project, which was implemented by the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) in collaboration with Conservational International (CI) and BHP Billiton Trinidad and Tobago from August 2015 to January 2017. The Climate ACTT project sought to strengthen the capacity of five civil society organisations (CSOs) in Trinidad and Tobago to internationally accepted levels of best practice in two areas: institutional strengthening and technical capacity to deliver projects and programmes related to climate change adaptation and resilience. The purpose of the toolkit is to provide CSOs in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean with practical information and examples to assist them in designing and implementing effective climate change projects and programmes in their communities. The toolkit includes innovative tools and case studies on communicating for awareness and advocacy on climate change, assessing vulnerability to climate change, and planning and taking action to adapt and build local resilience.

A Bridge between Society and Universities: A Documentary Analysis of Science Shops

Citizen science surfaced as a new way of conducting research and science shops are one of the initiatives in which citizen collaboration with scientists has been most visible. These organisations provide independent and participatory support for research in response to civil society’s problems/needs. Although science shops have pioneered the furthering of citizen participation, the general public is still scantly aware of their existence. This study aimed to explore that matter, identifying and analysing the literature on science shops with bibliometric techniques. Different sources of information have been consulted; namely, Web of Science and SCOPUS database; Google Scholar; CORDIS European Projects Database; and My News. The information collected from 158 documents was analysed and their main characteristics identified. A map of science shops was constructed to show existing initiatives and those mentioned in the texts. We also offer a chronology of the main milestones on the subject mentioned in the texts. The results show the importance that countries like those in Europe, especially The Netherlands, attach to these activities and it is evident that the content can be very varied, although the environmental issues are highlighted.

2nd GUNi International Conference on SDGs: Higher Education and Science take action - Registration is now open!

5th and 6th of March 2020 at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona. 

This second edition will put the spotlight on how higher education institutions are embedding sustainable development in their core missions, and will focus on showcasing, explaining and sharing scientific research, innovative practices, projects, programmes and initiatives that university communities are carrying out with the aim of implementing the 2030 Agenda. These will include different perspectives and approaches: from research to teaching, institutional leadership and student initiatives. Taking a pragmatic and multidisciplinary approach, this International Conference will bring together scholars, university professionals, students, experts and practitioners from all around the world.

Encounters in Citizen Science - The European conference for citizen and participatory science by the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA)

Echoes from the future - 2020 ECSITE conference

11th - 13th June, Ljubljana, Slovenia

How will climate change, big data, personalised medicine, artificial intelligence, fake news or biodiversity loss shape the future science engagement? What new skills, partnerships, management styles or collections policies do we need for the future? Science engagement organisations could be one of the spaces where challenging ethical questions are tackled and the future anticipated and co-invented. At a time where public discourse about the future seems torn between hopeless dystopia and hopeful reliance on technology, how can we empower citizens to envision, shape and demand more sustainable, ethical, human-led and human-centred technological solutions?

9th Living Knowledge Conference 2020

The 9th Living Knowledge Conference will be organized by the six Science Shops of the University of Groningen. The theme of the conference will be “synergy” - among people, among approaches, and even among objectives, in order to have more and better collaboration between researchers and civil society.

A citizen science decade (2020-2030) in support to the Sustainable Development Goals

October 14-15, Berlin, Germany

In October 2020, the Museum für Naturkunde with many partners, supported by the European Commission and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), will run a large conference in order to showcase, evaluate, and discuss the contribution of citizen science to frame and achieve the SDGs.At this conference, citizen scientists as well as institutional linked scientists, politicians, NGOs, economists, and the civil society will discuss and experiment citizen science and its link to sustainability. In addition, a citizen science festival will take place.
